We are excited to say our very own Kevin Barrett wrote an article for Walter Magazine about experiments he has done with whiskey. In the article, Kevin discusses how he got his start (hint hint, it was at Christmas time)! He also drops some major whiskey knowledge and gives you the ingredients to make A Lovely View of Heaven, one of Dram & Draught’s featured cocktails, at home.
Check out a little preview of the article below and make sure you pick up a copy or read the full article online at WalterMagazine.com.
Experimenting With Aging Whiskey
“When I was a child, I received a chemistry set for Christmas. I thought it was the coolest thing in the world, and I was excited about its possibilities. I envisioned mixology of the sort you see on TV: I thought I was going to solve crimes with my sudden forensic aptitude. I thought I was going to be Batman. I planned to make smoke bombs and Batarangs…but Santa swindled me…”
Boy, Are We Glad Kevin Is Not Batman
Spoiler alert: Kevin is not Batman – but what he can do with a cocktail is really quite extraordinary.
One of Kevin’s grown-up chemistry experiments is to play with the knowledge that Whiskey gets up to 80 percent of its flavor and all of its color from the barrel.
In the article, Kevin tests two hypotheses and discusses his results.
Hypothesis 1: Whiskey served from a barrel will change in flavor after a few months.
Hypothesis 2: Whiskey kept in a bottle will change in flavor if given enough time.

Stop by Dram & Draught and ask Kevin about the article and maybe he will let you in on a few more of the experiments he has done while you enjoy a cocktail created by the man himself.
