Dram and Draught Co-Founder Kevin Barrett and our head Raleigh barman Ian Murray traveled to Oxford, MS, October 24-26, 2019, for the Southern Foodways Fall Symposium. The Southern Foodways Alliance drives a more progressive future by leading conversations that challenge existing constructs, shape perspectives, and foster meaningful discussions. They reconsider the past with research, scrutiny, and documentation. For 2019, the Southern Foodways Alliance tells stories of the domestic and public labor that powers growing, cooking, and serving food. For their twenty-second fall symposium, SFA weaves together smart talks, great food, compelling art, and challenging conversations.
Kevin and Ian arrived on Thursday, October 24, and started with a happy hour at host’s Sara Camp Miliam’s Home. The party continued with a welcome cocktail featuring one of our favorite southern spirits, Cathead. They ate well with raw oysters and oyster stew from Watchman’s Seafood & Spirits owner Bryan Rackley, and Oyster South at William Faulkner’s famous Rowan Oak.
Friday started off early at The Inn at Ole Miss with Anson Mills Bomb Biscuits followed by lectures and films from Paul Ortiz, Ava Lowrey, and Susan Marquis to name a few. Lunch was then served in The Grove, home of the famous tailgate at The University of Mississippi. The guys wrapped the afternoon by attending more powerful lectures like “The Price Of Campus Food”.
On Saturday, October 26, Kevin and Ian were able to listen to our pal from Raleigh, Van Nolintha, co-owner of Bida Manda and Brewery Bhavana, speak about refugee labor. That afternoon, attendees boarded the Double Decker bus to head downtown to Square Books for a book signing. The night ended with a Marker’s Mark Toast and a Tabasco Celebration Supper!
Before heading back to Raleigh, Kevin and Ian hit Memphis, TN, for a little relaxation and good music! The weekend was filled with great food, hospitality-minded people, and meeting new friends from far and wide. Kevin and Ian both came back home with a new sense of excitement about the hospitality industry.
