Restaurants. Real Estate. Wine retail. Construction. Those are just some of the industries Dram & Draught founders Kevin Barrett and Drew Schenck have worked in during their professional histories. Now, the Downtown Raleigh bar proprietors can add “grocer” to the lineup. In light of the North Carolina-mandated closure of restaurant dining rooms and bars, the popular Downtown Raleigh whiskey establishment faced the same struggle as many others: send its hospitality-industry employees home while doors remain locked or quickly pivot to provide another neighborhood service in the interim. They opted for the pivot… to a full-service market.
Beginning Friday, March 20, 2020, at 2 p.m., “Dram Grog & Grocery” will be open daily from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. offering wine, growlers of beer, cases of beer, toilet paper and other disposables, produce, ground meat, canned goods, and a variety of other household items that the pop-up grocer is able to source from local and national distributors. Shopping will be limited to four shoppers in at one time with hand sanitizer provided at the door. The existing intensified cleaning procedures that Dram & Draught had already enacted prior to the state-mandated shutdown remain in place – consistent staff handwashing, regular interval and on-demand sanitizing of surfaces, and the like.
Kevin Barrett, Schenck’s co-founder and business partner, notes that the duo envisions this temporary shopping market not only as a way to keep their hospitality employees working during a time that’s adversely impacting so many of their peers but also as a service to the Glenwood South community that has limited shopping options within walking distance for residents. He makes a point to note that they are using a minimal-markup strategy in the pricing of all retail items, enough to pay the team and keep the lights on. Additionally, seniors age 65 and older are eligible for free delivery within five miles – deliveries will be scheduled once daily.
Located on the ground floor of 1 Glenwood Avenue at the corner of Morgan Street, the most convenient nearby parking option is just across the street in the Origin Hotel parking deck, available at hourly rates for retail guests.
